At the closer distance, the new recruit realized that the boy, though he looked mostly human, was certainly not. His skin was pale and flaky, and cracked like parched lands in the summer. The whites of his eyes were a dark grey, while his irises were red as blood and his pupils were a glazed over white, like the eyes of a dead man. His hair was short, though it hung slightly in his face, and was a pale silvery blond.
"What do you want?" demanded the commander gruffly.
"Want?" The boy looked at him, tipping his head curiously to the side. "I was everything. Everyone. Your whole rotten country and its four pathetic kingdoms and the world beyond that- I want it all." He grinned then, licking his lips. "I want to taste your pleasure and your pain and drain every last drop of your blood from your bodies until you're all as ugly and hollow as I am." he paused, looking past the two soldiers and cleared his throat. "As we are."
The two soldiers glanced over their soldiers to see an army of white flaky skinned men with glowing red eyes and white dead pupils.
"By the gods...." breathed the commander, obviously shaken. "The men we sent...." he looked across the familiar faces that stared blankly up at him with their lifeless eyes.
"You...... you monster!" He roared, whirling back to face the boy. "You demon scum-!"
He was cut off as the tentacle holding him suddenly flung him at the waiting army, and the new recruit watched in horror as the pale skinned ones dove on him, tearing into him with fangs an claws like starving wolves.
His screams of agony rang in the new recruit's ears until they died suddenly to be replaced with a frantic gurgling.
The new recruit cringed, closing his eyes and praying that he would wake up and it would all be a dream, whimpering softly.
The boy chuckled, drawing his attention away from the frenzied pale ones below and back to the spider.
"Jira doesn't like loud noises." he said, stroking the spider tenderly. "You're nice and quiet though. We like you." He grinned, meeting the new recruit's gaze. "What is your name, boy?"
"T-... T-T-Tavi, sir...." stammered the new recruit softly.
"Well Tavi, we're about to have some delicious fun.... Jira, unburden him." The boy's grin became sinister and hungry.
Tavi winced as a faint stinging warmth suddenly rushed over him and looked down to see a pale green substance oozing out of the tentacle wrapped around him.
He frowned, panicking as his muscles began to relax against his will and the fabric of his clothes began to melt away as if it had been touched with acid.
"Wh-what's going on!?" he whimpered fearfully, fighting against the strange sensations.
The boy on the spider tsked softly, taking Tavi's face gently but firmly in his hand and tilting his face up.
"Relax Tavi," he purred. "I told you, we're going to have fun." He smiled seductively, and whispered, "And then I'll send you crawling back to your pathetic city with a message- The Darkness is coming, and there are no gods left to save you."

                                                        ~~^*^~~

                                                  Two weeks later…

The midday sun shone brightly down on the world as the princess and her wolf guardian strolled casually through the city gardens.

The gardens were a maze of tall towering shrubs covered in dazzling bright flowers and scattered with small shrines to the gods. In the center of the garden was a gigantic white tree known as a venwood tree, a white tree with a strange pearly shine to its bark and pale violet leaves that sparkled like morning dew in the right light where the lion god Nivaran was said to reside to watch over mankind.

The princess sighed happily, taking a deep breath to savor the unique scents of the many exotic and beautiful flowers blooming there.

  "Ah, good day your grace!"
The princess looked up to see one of her newer servant girls hauling a rather large bucket of water toward the castle.
"Good day Nelly." She smiled, frowning faintly as the girl stumbled and nearly spilled the water.
"Nelly, isn't hauling water the men's job?" She asked.
Nelly nodded. "Usually yes your grace, but all the men were busy and I do so love the gardens..." She trailed off, looking at her feet. "I won't do it again. Sorry, your grace."
The princess chuckled. "Sorry for what? You've done nothing wrong. I tell you what- why don't I ask my father if he could have you and one of the garden girls trade work? I think I've heard Gina complain about the sunlight being so bright."
A broad smile burst across Nelly's face and she looked up excitedly. "Really? You'd do that?" She asked.
The princess nodded, giggling. "I'll ask him then. Now go on- I'm sure someone needs that water if they sent you to fetch it."
